Martijn L. Schippers 

Martijn L. Schippers (1990) is Associate Professor of EU Customs Law at Erasmus School of Law and Programme Coordinator of the prestigious Post-Master in EU Customs Law and Top-Level Seminar in EU Customs Law at Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is also a member of EY’s Global Trade & Customs team. He obtained LL.M. degrees in Tax Law and Company Law from Erasmus School of Law in 2014, followed by a Post-Master degree in EU Customs Law from Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2016.

In 2021, he earned his PhD from Erasmus School of Law with a dissertation on customs valuation in a globalized world. In recognition of his academic contributions, he was awarded the Stevens Prize by Wolters Kluwer in 2020 for his publications in 2019. In 2022, he received the biennial award of the Vereniging voor Belastingwetenschap for the best PhD thesis in the field of taxation. Schippers publishes extensively on customs law, indirect taxation, and ESG-related aspects of international trade in both Dutch and international academic and professional journals. He serves on the editorial and advisory boards of Maandblad Belasting Beschouwingen (MBB), the Global Trade and Customs Journal, and the Customs Scientific Journal.

He has participated in several international research initiatives, including IBFD’s research project on Special Tax Zones, the ECCE project under the Hercule III Programme (GA 101014828), and the NWO KIC Starter Project Flixophobia. In addition to his research activities, he was one of the founders of the Indirect Tax Master’s programme at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he currently coordinates and teaches a number of courses. He is also a frequent guest lecturer at universities and professional institutions in the Netherlands and abroad, including the Universities of Lisbon, Maastricht, Curaçao, Antwerp, and Lund, as well as organisations such as IBFD, the Dutch Association of Tax Advisers (NOB), and PE Academy.
